The story · Chapter one
Calm is what strength looks like
Every park has its big male, and most of them earn the title by noise. Mock charges at jeeps, roaring matches across valleys, the whole drama of dominance. Pujari never bothered. Around two hundred and twenty kilos of tiger would come down the track past a line of vehicles, and guides who had watched him for years would point out the thing that made him different: he never once turned his head. Not curiosity, not irritation. The jeeps simply did not matter to him.
That is what the guides meant when they called him the gentleman. It was never softness. An animal that size fears nothing in the forest, and in a tiger, real confidence looks exactly like not caring. He held prime Bandhavgarh ground for years the quiet way, and the quiet way is the hardest way to hold anything.

Chapter two
The end of an era
There is no retirement in a tiger reserve. A male holds his ground until a younger, stronger animal decides the ground should change hands, and every big male's story ends the same way if the poachers and the roads do not get him first. For Pujari the challenger was D1, and in 2026 the fight finally came that he did not walk away from.
It is the oldest law in the forest and it spares nobody, not even the gentleman. What is left of him is the memory of a very big animal who never needed to prove it, and a territory that now answers to another name. That is not a sad ending. In a healthy forest, it is the only ending there is.
